Description

Python is used in a wide range of geoscientific applications, such as for image processing in remote sensing, for generating and processing digital elevation models, and for analyzing time series. This 5-days course introduces methods of data analysis in geosciences using Python, such as basic statistics for univariate, bivariate and multivariate datasets, time-series analysis, signal processing, the analysis of spatial and directional data, and image analysis.

Program

This short course introduces Python programming for exploring and modeling data in Earth Sciences. Participants will start from the basics, such as setting up the programming environment and writing their first lines of code, and progress to advanced skills in data visualization, analysis, and modeling specific to Earth Science applications. Each session includes detailed, hands-on coding examples with comprehensive explanations. Designed for beginners in Python programming, the course is particularly suited for Ph.D. students aiming to apply Python to geological problem-solving.

Information

Maurizio Petrelli: is a professor in igneous petrology at the Department of Physics and Geology, University of Perugia (Italy). He earned his Ph.D. in Earth Sciences in 2006 from the University of Perugia. His researches focus on unveiling volcanic plumbing systems' architectures and pre-eruptive dynamics coupling petrological, volcanological, geochemical, and computational investigations. The main aim is to allow volcanic hazard assessment, risk mitigation, and the unveiling of potential resources. Analytical interests focus on petrologic investigations and tephra studies by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Maurizio also authored two books to spark interest in Python programming and Machine Learning among students in the Earth Sciences and within the petrological and volcanological communities.
