Description

This field excursion will be held in Wilhelmshaven, northern Germany, where the students have access to the research vessel SENKENBERG and investigate the different environmental settings at the coast (tidal flats, beach processes, dune formation, microbial mats, salt marshes, rocky intertidal zones) at different locations (Jade Bay, barrier island Spiekeroog, Helgoland) as well as at the Senkenberg am Meer institute.

 

Program

1st Day - Arrival by train/transfer to Institute/occupation of guest rooms.

2nd Day - Welcome address in lecture theatre

Group 1 (11 person): Excursion with research vessel „Senckenberg": demonstration of marine geological and biological research procedures and methods at sea. / Lecture to barrier island excursion.

Group 2 (11 Person): Lecture on an excursion to Crildumersiel. Excursion into the marginal tidal flats of the Jade at Crildumersiel: sedimentary facies/biofacies/bioturbation (transect mudflats / mixed flats/sand flats)

3rd Day

Group 1 (11 person): Lecture on an excursion to Crildumersiel. Excursion into the marginal tidal flats of the Jade at Crildumersiel: sedimentary facies, biofacies, bioturbation (transect mudflats / mixed flats/sand flats)

Group 2 (11 Person): Excursion with research vessel „Senckenberg": demonstration of marine geological and biological research procedures and methods at sea. / Lecture to barrier island excursion.

4th Day - Excursion to barrier island Spiekeroog (barrier-Island transect): beach processes / supratidal flats/dune formation / microbial mats / back-barrier salt marsh / back-barrier tidal flats.

5th Day - Excursion to the rocky intertidal of Helgoland Island (Lower Triassic - Buntsandstein).

6th Day - Geological excursion to the coastal zone around Jade Bay: Pleistocene sands / Holocene marshlands / thick mudflats at Dangast / history of diking/visit to labs.

7th Day - Transfer to railway station/return journey to

Information

Travel and accomodation as well as transfers to islands will be covered by CUSO ESPP.
